UPDATE: Lorde has released the first two singles from her upcoming album Melodrama, in addition to giving us an official release date. The pop star’s highly anticipated sophomore album is set to drop on June 16th. This past weekend on Saturday Night Live, Lorde debuted “Liability“, a song she said was inspired by Rihanna’s “Higher”. Check it out below:
Last Summer, Lorde gave us the news we were all waiting for: the highly anticipated follow-up to Pure Heroine is complete. Four months ago, she painted a more intimate picture of her new album. She took to Facebook on the eve of her birthday and described the record as a more adult affair, straying away from her obsession with adolescence that largely influenced Pure Heroine. She reminded us of how music can help one understand the beauty and pain of growing up, moving away, and discovering the world. Lorde, as always, is poignant and honest. She stated:
“All I wanted to do was dance. I whispered into ears and let my eyes blaze on high and for the first time I felt this intimate, empire-sized inner power. And then I wrote a record about it, all of it, so much more than what I’ve written down here, and I’m in new york getting it done. And tomorrow, I’m not a kid any more, and more and more I’m realizing that the weirdness of those Mylar balloons is going to be okay. Writing Pure Heroine was my way of enshrining our teenage glory, putting it up in lights forever so that part of me never dies, and this record – well, this one is about what comes next.”
You can check out the full post here, and we suggest it. Not only is it a lovely read, but it gives a wider look at the experiences and philosophy Lorde channeled into her sophomore album.
Now, out of nowhere, Lorde has begun promoting her new album. Ears perked up once it was known that Lorde would be performing at SNL on March 10th, in addition to two music festival appearances: Coachella and Governor’s Ball. But now, we have more concrete reasons to believe that Lorde’s new album will be coming out this month. This past Sunday, a short commercial starring Lorde was broadcast across major TV channels in her home of New Zealand. The teaser clip shows Lorde sitting in the backseat of a cab, eating snacks, with a song playing in the background—possibly one of her new songs—while the date March 2, 2017 is posted on the screen. Is March 2nd when she will drop her first single, the upbeat dance song we heard in the commercial’s background? Or will it be the album release date of Lorde’s new album? The verdict is still out.
But just yesterday (February 27, 2017), Lorde took to Twitter and provided a link to a website with an updated teaser trailer. The name of the website, “M*******A“, could be a hint to the single’s title, or the album itself. The trailer also had “March 2, 2017 NYC” plastered on the video. Since this doesn’t correspond with the date we know Lorde is performing on SNL, this leads us to believe she will have a concert in NYC the night her first single drops.
Though we’re not sure exactly what a lot of the promotion and curiosity-fueling trailer means, but we know it will all amount to something incredible. This is Lorde we’re talking about after all. Check back for more updates regarding Lorde’s upcoming album, tour dates, and more! In the mean time, let’s relive Lorde’s incredible performance at Coachella back in 2014.
